Ocean Friendly Living

Sustainable Surf

Manhattan Beach, CA; San Francisco, CA

Sustainable Surf is a California-based non-profit charity organization co-founded by social entrepreneurs Michael Stewart and Kevin Whilden, to “catalyze” the transformation of surf culture into a powerful force for protecting the ocean playground.

Sustainable Surf takes an integrated “systems thinking” approach with all their initiatives, in order to engage both individuals and businesses together in a partnership to solve the most pressing environmental issues facing our oceans. The scope of their program efforts include: developing more sustainable surfboard options (ECOBOARD Project), styrofoam waste recycling (Waste to Waves) and healthier lifestyle choices (Deep Blue Life). All of which ultimately help to resolve negative impacts related to climate change (ocean acidification, sea level rise and coastal erosion), marine plastic pollution, and water quality issues that threaten the health of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.
